Synopsis:

We are living in an age where money rules the world and buys anything. Some even place the absolute measure of happiness on material gain. Money, fame and social ascension ? they are all necessary elements in life. While they are conditions of happiness, not the end itself, we are leading our lives not thinking about the meaning and value of life but rather being controlled by material pursuit, without realizing it. It is, of course, up to individuals to set their goal on money, fame, social success, or anything else for that matter, but the choice should be premised on peace of mind. The drama unfolds stories of people who follow the hearts that they were born with, rather than artificial values. “Love” is what gives us the strength to go on in this world. Every human being is bound to love oneself, one’s family and others, and through the love for others, we form yet another family and create another “me.” They say there’s nothing more precious than family in this tough world. That is why it is said that blood is thicker than water. Then from where comes the saying “A family is something you want to throw away if nobody is watching?” Even a family is not built on blood alone. It is built by love. This drama is about “love.” It’s a story about people who are realizing love and about a woman who follows her own heart and toils to win her love. A woman who has everything falls in love with a guy who lives with his grandmother, his widower father and who got his high school diploma only through the equivalency exam. A love is a condensed form of life, and life just doesn’t turn out the way you plan or hope for. Countless mountains and waters await you. This is a story about finding life’s true meaning and happiness by overcoming all adversities with sacrifice, patience and forgiveness, which are all other names for love. This is a story about love fought for. All love requires effort. Here there is a love between a man and woman as represented by Dong-soo and Seon-joo. Dong-soo’s family is formed by blood but founded on love and in Seon-joo’s family, material wealth takes the highest priority. The drama intends to show what we should do to win true happiness and also the fact that a caring, healing and hopeful love can arise between new family relationships created by marriage.

Seo Dong-soo (played by Kim Ji-hoon)
Seo Pil-doo's eldest son, he really is a chip off the old block in looks as well as personality. While he shows infinite generosity to the powerless and weak, he never steps back from abuse and arrogance of the wealthy. Though he doesn't have much schooling or possession, he never backs down from any injustice. His fury is like raging fire, but he never gets angry unless provoked. Personality-wise, he has everything a girl would ask for. If only he had better educational and financial background...
His aging grandma, his father whose deep anger has been all but dissolved by time, his brother Dong-seok who is an immature maverick, and his sister Jae-hee who is so pure that makes Dong-soo worried...Dong-soo must protect every one of them and is willingly embracing them with love.
16 years ago, when Dong-soo was in the 7th grade, his father's ship was in an accident in which several of the ship's crew were killed. The man who wrongfully accused his father for the accident and made him serve time; the man who, as if that wasn't enough, even took his father's entire wealth and ran off! The man responsible for the death of his mother, who fell ill shocked by the whole event! He can't crumble like that all because of that inhuman low-life of a human being. Someday, he will track him down and avenge my father and my mother! Dong-soo can't be busier; when he has time off from the seaweed field, he works on a marine technology using seaweed, lends his hand to nearby fishing grounds and runs errands at a fisheries market. On top of that, he takes care of both big and small matters involving his village. He has lived a more honest and diligent life than anyone else, if not for himself then for his father who is living his life like a criminal, unable to clear himself of the wrongful charges brought against him.

Lee Seon-joo (played by Jo Yeu-jung)
Eldest daughter of Lee Dae-yang, the owner of the biggest nightclub in northern Seoul and the president of Dae-yang Fisheries which has grown non-stop over the past few years. Ever since her teenage years, she grew up hearing her father say over and over again, "How come you are so inadequate?" Though she is decent looking by all standards, to her overachieving father Lee Dae-yang's eyes, she's helplessly ugly and unrefined. In every aspect, she wasn't worthy of being the ldest daughter of Lee Dae-yang, who aspires to develop his company as a major corporation.
Because of all that, she has never stood up against him. She wasn't sure if she could overcome her father's enormous granite-hard charisma. Maybe she has been brainwashed by her father's endless criticism. "I'm ugly... I'm inadequate..." She has become unenthusiastic about things surrounding her, and always felt empty and lonely.
Because of her father whom she is most scared of in the whole world...
She loses her nerve and becomes weak in front of her father. She needs formidable strength and talent to escape her father but sadly, she is not talented at all. Recently, she secretly started an ambitious online clothing store for women, only to be chastised cruelly by her father when he found out. Forced by her father, she is now taking an etiquette course at Yejiwon, an institute that teaches traditional Korean customs and culture, and a high-class cooking class specifically designed for women from prestigious families, trying very hard to refrain from yawning and dozing...
But what can she do? She just has to do what she is told...

Oh Hyeong-cheol (played by Jung Chan)
Manager of Planning Department at Dae-yang Fisheries, he is the one behind Dae-yang's recent expansion to restaurant and fisheries businesses from its humble'standing as a food processor. He is always neat, clean-cut and looking proud of himself, but is never arrogant.

Highly competitive by nature and a talented person who was never in second place, he never lost to anyone on his ability. His life's goal is success! He had to study hard despite seeing the hardships that his mother had to endure to raise him and his brother. Over time, he forgot how to smile brightly for sheer joy.
Recommended by one of his professors during his junior year, he had a chance to work as an intern at Dae-yang Fisheries, where he was picked personally by Lee Dae-yang who recognized his outstanding talent. After completing an MBA course at Stanford University, which was funded by Mr. Lee under the condition that Hyeong-cheol would return to work for his company, he now works the manager of Planning Department. While it was his obligation to return to work for Lee Dae-yang who gave him an opportunity to study abroad, he found the company, though still relatively small in size, a perfect place for him to realize both his potential and aspirations, knowing Lee Dae-yang's ambition and strong trust in him. Hyeong-cheol's vigorous efforts have enabled the company to achieve remarkable growth day after day.

Lee Hye-joo (played by Yoon Se-A)
